Designed for lonely, isolated seniors and older persons with disabilities, this initiative was not just about teaching digital skills—it was about creating connections and fostering creativity.

Imagine a senior cautiously holding a smartphone, unsure where to start. Now, picture that same individual confidently snapping photos, editing videos, and proudly sharing their creations on Instagram. This transformation was exactly what Fei Yue Community Services set out to achieve with their Community V.I.P (Videographer, Instagrammer, Photographer) project.

Turning Loneliness into Connections

“Loneliness didn’t just hurt—it isolated”, shared Moses Anthony Shen, Programme Executive at Fei Yue. “We wanted to combat that by bringing seniors closer to their communities, even if they couldn’t physically be there.”

The Community V.I.P project was born out of this vision. With a focus on photography, videography and Instagram storytelling, the programme empowered seniors to connect virtually, bridged the digital divide and gave them a platform to share their stories.

“At first glance, Instagram might have seemed like a platform dominated by the younger generation, but that was precisely why it was chosen. We wanted to help seniors leap into a space they’d never explored before”, Moses explained. “Instagram’s emphasis on visual storytelling made it the perfect fit for teaching creative expression while encouraging connection.”

Workshops Tailored for Seniors

Since its launch, the project team has conducted 15 workshops and engaged over 260 seniors. Each four-session workshop, spanning eight hours, was carefully crafted to cater to participants’ tech proficiency level and pace of learning.

“Many seniors walked into our first session unsure of themselves”, Moses recalled. “Some doubted their ability to learn new skills and keep up with the younger generation, while others felt technology was simply too intimidating.”

To address these concerns, trainers used simple language, visual aids, and step-by-step guides. Sessions began with icebreakers to ease participants into using their smartphones before diving into hands-on exercises like taking photos, creating short videos, and editing content. Each session ended with participants showcasing their work—a moment that always brought smiles and applause.

“There was something magical about seeing their confidence grow”, Moses shared. “They came in apprehensive but left feeling proud of what they had created.”

Drone Flying and Scam Spotting

Beyond Instagram storytelling, participants also got a taste of drone videography. While each senior only had a few minutes of practice, the experience sparked excitement. “A couple once brought their drone to a session, saying they’d never dared to use it on their own”, Moses said with a smile.

Participants also learnt essential digital wellness knowledge, such as spotting fake accounts, avoiding suspicious scam links, and how to stay safe online. These lessons ensured that seniors didn’t just engage with technology—they navigated it confidently and securely.

Moments That Left a Mark

Some of the programme’s most memorable moments came from seeing seniors’ creativity shine. During an Instagram Mid-Autumn contest, participants eagerly showcased their skills by capturing festive moments through photography and videography. “It was incredible to see them apply what they had learnt so enthusiastically”, Moses said.

Another standout moment involved seniors sharing feedback about the workshops. One participant wrote, “I loved how the trainers understood our pace and were patient with us. They didn’t rush, and that made all the difference.” Another shared, “This course enriched my life and gave me new knowledge I never thought I’d have.”

A Virtual Community for Lifelong Connections

The learning didn’t end when the sessions did. Fei Yue has created a virtual community to keep seniors connected, as well as foster continuous learning and interaction. Through group chats, regular check-ins, and continued engagement on social media, participants stayed active and involved. Bi-monthly topics that were introduced sparked discussions and encouraged continued application of their digital skills.

This ongoing interaction proved invaluable. “We’ve seen seniors continue experimenting with photography and videography in their daily lives”, Moses shared. “Some even explored new tools like TikTok or advanced video editing software.” Occasionally, seniors were invited to exclusive events or given access to special privileges, reinforcing their sense of belonging and value within the community.

Overcoming Challenges with Patience and Care

Of course, the journey wasn’t without its hurdles. Seniors came from diverse backgrounds, and for many, technology was a completely new territory. “Some were afraid of making mistakes, while others struggled to understand how their smartphones worked”, Moses explained.

The solution? Patience, empathy, and a supportive learning environment. Trainers worked one-on-one with participants, offering encouragement and tailoring approaches to individual needs.

“It wasn’t just about teaching skills—it was about building confidence”, Moses said. “When seniors realised they could do things they once thought impossible, it was a powerful moment.”

Empowering Seniors, One Story at a Time

Through Community V.I.P, Fei Yue is transforming the lives of seniors, one photograph, video, and Instagram post at a time. This initiative was more than a workshop—it was a gateway to creativity, connection, and confidence for those who may have once felt left behind.

As Moses put it, “When seniors realised they could tell their stories, connect with others, and be part of a community, it was a beautiful thing. That’s what Community V.I.P was all about.”

With each senior who picked up a camera or learnt to navigate Instagram, Fei Yue reaffirmed the power of inclusion and the limitless potential of technology to enrich lives. The project’s success would not have been possible without support from IMDA’s Digital for Life Fund. Funding allowed Fei Yue to purchase the necessary equipment for the workshops, hire skilled trainers, and offer workshops at an affordable cost. “We were incredibly grateful for this support”, Moses emphasised.

What’s Next for Community V.I.P?

Looking ahead, Fei Yue has ambitious plans to expand its digital inclusion efforts. The organisation is exploring AI-powered tools tailored for seniors, such as health monitoring apps, virtual companionship solutions, and AI tools that help enhance productivity for those still in the workforce.

“Our goal was to ensure that seniors not only adapt to technology but thrive with it”, Moses shared. “‘Digital for Life’ is about empowering people at every stage of life to embrace the opportunities technology brings.”

For organisations looking to launch similar initiatives, Moses offered this advice, “Start by understanding your audience. Tailor your program to their needs, make it engaging, and never underestimate the value of patience.”
