Your child needs to know they’re seen, heard, and supported – especially when life gets tough. As a parent, the way you engage with your child can make all the difference. By keeping conversations open, listening without judgment, and seeking help when needed, you give your child the confidence to know they’re never alone. Here are four simple ways to engage and support your child’s mental well-being.
Four steps to engage and support your child
- Open a Dialogue
Choose a calm, private moment, like after dinner, to gently start the chat about their well-being. This encourages them to share what’s on their mind.
You might say
“How have things been going for you? Anything you’d like to share?”
“I’ve noticed you seem a bit different lately. What’s been on your mind?”
- Listen Actively
Show your child you’re there to listen, not to judge or jump straight to solutions.
You might say
“You can share anything with me, and I won’t judge.”
“I want you to know that it’s okay to talk to me about anything you’re feeling or experiencing. I’m here for you.”
- Check in Regularly
Engagement and support doesn’t stop after one talk. Small, everyday check-ins over meals, walks, or bedtime chats would show your child that they can always turn to you for help.
You might say
“Tell me about your day today.”
“I like catching up with you—what’s been on your mind lately?”
- Seek Help if Needed
If you are still concerned, seek help through mental health services, which can provide guidance and support. Remember, it is okay to reach out for help.
You might start with:
“If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it might help to talk to someone together. Would you be open to meeting a counsellor or a mental healthcare professional together?”
