With a rapidly evolving digital landscape, many families find themselves struggling to keep up with the types of risks and challenges their children face online. Parents often feel overwhelmed by the pace of new online platforms, associated dangers, and digital behaviours their children are being exposed to. Parents want to protect their children but don't always know where and how to begin.
Recognising this urgent need, Fei Yue Community Services launched the Digital S.O.S. programme to empower families, including both parents and youths, with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to navigate the digital world safely.
"Digital S.O.S. was created to provide families with simple, practical tools they can use immediately, along with programme materials that support ongoing conversations about digital safety," explained Anna Lee, Senior Programme Executive at Fei Yue Community Services.
Equipping Families to Navigate the Online World Safely
Children today are growing up in a digital world that is changing more quickly than ever. They may encounter harms like cyberbullying, interactions with unsafe strangers, inappropriate content, face peer pressure on social media, and misinformation. Often, children face these online threats before they are old enough or ready to understand and deal with them.
"What makes online safety education so critical is that the risks are now hidden in plain sight, all within platforms that our children use daily for school, friendships, entertainment, and self-expression. Without guidance, what they encounter in these spaces can have a negative influence on their mental well-being, identity, and relationships," Anna shared.
To help families overcome these challenges, the Digital S.O.S. workshop goes beyond teaching about current online risks by building future-proof digital instincts. By invoking real-world scenarios, trending reported stories, and hands-on activities, the programme prepares parents and youths to recognise early warning signs across online platforms, even new ones that may emerge. The workshop also emphasises on critical thinking skills, and encourages families to keep the conversations going at home so that they can spot and respond to new online risks quickly.
Turning Digital Tension into Family Trust
When it comes to guiding their children online, parents often face several challenges. Some struggle with not fully understanding the apps or online platforms their children use, or feel unsure about how to set rules without eroding the trust that they have built with their children. Others may find it hard to start conversations about sensitive online experiences, guide their child to balance screen time with schoolwork and family life, or manage their children's emotions when device use becomes a point of conflict.
The Digital S.O.S. programme helps parents understand these online risks and gives them simple ways to set healthy boundaries with their children. By using conversation starters and guided scripts, it moves away from "policing behaviour" and focuses on "building trust and fostering healthy digital habits as a family."
"Many parents shared that the workshop helped them feel empowered and confident in transforming digital safety from a stressful task into a shared family journey," Anna noted.
Creating Shared Routines and Guidelines as a Family
Each Digital S.O.S. workshop is hands-on, focused on families, and lets participants lead - so everyone can talk openly about staying safe online. The session begins with a fun warm-up activity where parents and children work together, followed by an introduction of essential knowledge of online harms through curated content.
Participants then break into small groups for peer-learning discussions, where they can express concerns, clarify expectations, and share personal experiences from both the parents’ and the youths’ perspectives. The insights and reflections from these conversations are later shared with the whole room. One parent of a 13-year-old teen shared that, "The facilitated conversations were very helpful for students and parents to build and match expectations."
After equipping participants with practical tips, each parent-child pair works on their own Family Digital Plan - a structured set of guidelines that helps them reflect on their digital habits, set shared agreements, and make healthier digital decisions together.
"Because the plan is built together, children are more likely to cooperate, and parents feel supported rather than alone in enforcing rules. Families tell us that the plan gives them structure, reduces conflicts at home, and creates healthier digital habits for everyone," Anna shared.
By the end of the workshop, Fei Yue hopes families feel more confident talking about online experiences, ready to handle digital risks, and united through a shared Family Digital Plan to stay safe online together.
Spreading the Importance Digital Well-being
The Digital for Life Fund played a crucial role in helping Fei Yue bring this vision to life. Through its support, Fei Yue was able to design family-centred workshops, develop age-appropriate learning tools, and offer the programme at no cost to ensure it is accessible to families in various community touchpoints. The Fund also enabled the team to expand their outreach, reaching more parents and youths island-wide.
Looking ahead, Fei Yue plans to reach more families with their digital well-being efforts - by offering workshops across various community spaces, training facilitators, introducing digital wellness programmes for schools, and continue developing specialised modules and resources to support families.
